1. Could you please give us a brief introduction of the academic organizations you are responsible?

AOSpine is a sub-specialty of renowned global academic non-profit organization AO Foundation. Nowadays, AOSpine is the largest global academic community of spine surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, academics, researchers, and other spine care professionals dedicated to delivering knowledge, experience, and evidence to improve patient care and outcomes.

Each year, AOSpine runs over 120 educational events in various formats, covering all aspects of spine surgery and reaching out to surgeons at every stage of their career. Educational events, includes courses, symposia, and academic congresses, aiming at providing an opportunity for hands-on learning, along with constructive discussions with faculty and colleagues in a stimulating environment. To ensure the educational quality, course programs are formulated under AOSpine curriculum, structured by expertise surgeons and instructed by faculty who received relevant professional education trainings.

In additional to structured courses/seminars, AOSpine Global Spine Congress is a well-recognized peer-review event which provides interactive academic discussion on critical spine care issues. The World Forum of Spine Research focuses on collaborating and sharing of spinal research findings, which also receive highest credibility on the academic and quality contents.

In terms of direct research activities, our goal is to perform elaborate research, from experimental to clinical studies. AOSpine leads the global spine care community by fostering innovation and evidence-based clinical practice. Understanding current and future scientific directions, and initiating research and guidance for the best in class education are driven by working groups. For example, Global Knowledge Forums have been established for clinical research in the field of Tumor, Spinal Cord Injury and Deformity and a Spine Research Network has been established focusing on Intervertebral Disc research.

In this way, the largest global spine care community grows and enriches itself in terms of skills, understanding, and professionalism. As a consequence, AOSpine members can advance their own research projects or improve patient care through knowledge sharing and access to state-of-the-art information.

For myself, I am the professor and the head of the medical school, and also the chief of the spinal unit in Hospital Univeritario Cajuru, Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUCPR).

Hospital Universitario Cajuru is the main hospital among the 3 hospitals and 1 outpatient clinic complex in the university. This is one of the main emergency hospitals serving an area of 3,000,000 population, and Trauma cases are mainly treated at this unit.

PUCPR is a private, non-profit Catholic university established in 1960. The main campus is located in Curitiba, the capital city of the State of Paraná, Brazil. It is an institution that reflects diversity, with more than 27,000 students in 60 undergraduate and over 150postgraduate courses. Over 80% of the faculty owns a master's or doctoral degree.

2. What is the content you will present for the COA this time?

Co-chaired by Dr. Luiz Vialle and Dr. Wen Yuan, AOSpine China Council, COA Pre–meeting, AOSpine Solutions for Complex and Controversial Cases, will be firstly held by AOSpine concurrently with the 6th International Congress of Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA2011) on 1st December, 2011 in Beijing, China. The AOSpine Solutions is a new concept that Dr. Vialle is trying to deliver and emphasize. He would like to let the global spine community know that AOSpine offers SOLUTIONS.

As the first AOSpine program being conjoint with COA, this educational event aimed to offer solutions to different clinical scenarios and provides a unique platform for spine surgeons to share their knowledge with one another. It should be a major step towards strengthening the professionals with latest concepts, ideas, skills and technologies to provide better solutions on spine care to patients.

In order to update the professionals in the community on the latest ideas and innovation with our international peers, four International and one Regional faculty from USA, UK and Hong Kong will join force with twelve leading spine surgeons in China to share their valuable experiences and deliver speeches on topics related to future initiatives of regional surgical movements.

Dr. Luiz Vialle would present a few complex clinical cases including Cervicothoracic Kyphosis and Post-Op Infection with Implant while delivering a series of lectures on Management of degenerative scoliosis, instability in TL trauma-role of classification and indication for Smith Petersen’s Osteotomy etc.

Through lectures, clinical cases, and lively discussion, this team will present an integrated approach to understanding of challenging spine disease and its state-of-the-art treatment.

3. Are there any future cooperation between you and Chinese Orthopaedic?

AOSpine’s vision is to become the leading global academic community for innovative education and research in spine care, inspiring lifelong learning and improving patients' lives.

We believe both Chinese orthopaedic surgeons and AOSpine could have fruitful collaboration through:

-       shaping the skills and understanding of spine principles through continuous education events and knowledge exchange

-       establishing new values and incentives for the creation of knowledge and sharing of wisdom through the connection and bridging with experts in other countries within the international platform provided by AOSpine

-       developing new products and instrumentations by teaming up Chinese orthopaedic surgeons and the AOSpine design and development orthopedic implants and instrumentation products for over 50 years under our renowned AO Research Institute (ARI) in Davos

AOSpine’s ultimate goal is to become the world’s number one global spine community, where information flows freely not only from the organization, but also among peers to integrate and improve clinical practices through the sharing of knowledge.

Therefore, AOSpine joint force with the world class experts like Chinese orthopaedic would benefit both parties mutually.

It is always an honor to have AOSpine participate in COA, a very representative event not only nationally in China but also globally all over the world. We can say this is only the beginning of AOSpine collaborating with Chinese orthopaedic surgeons. We see this as a very important first step to establish the education framework and the great symbol of the joint spirit in the Chinese orthopaedic surgeon community.

Lastly, we hope AOSpine can join efforts with COA for the development of Spinal Education in China continuously.

4. Any suggestions on the future development of Chinese Orthopaedic?

I believe the Chinese orthopaedic surgeon community will have strong and prosper development in the global stage and I would have the following suggestions if I may:

1.     I believe the Chinese orthopaedic surgeons should take a more active role in the international community. With the accumulated clinical experience and professional knowledge, the Chinese orthopaedic surgeons should share and exchange the knowledge in the international level. AOSpine is the best platform in doing so as AOSpine has an excellent country, regional and international structure in which its members can have easy access to different courses and meetings. As our vision said, the key to inspire lifelong learning relies on the knowledge exchange between the fellow surgeons.

2.     I believe the Chinese orthopaedic surgeons should develop a collaborative mode with the neurosurgeon community. Engaging the neurosurgeon community may inspire new perspectives in the spinal surgery and improve the patient care. As a matter of fact, it is a global trend in the spine world, such as in Latin America, mutual advantages are commenced by the merging of the orthopaedic and neurosurgeon communities.

3.     I believe the Chinese orthopaedic surgeons should have more participation in spinal research. I understand spinal research has recently started in China and it is already blooming. I would suggest the Chinese orthopaedic surgeons can make use of AOSpine, such as AOSpine Research Institute and AOSpine Clinical Investigation & Documentation (AOCID), so that the surgeons can have better alignment with international research standard and protocol. AOSpine also offers different research grants and awards to the surgeons who are willing to contribute in order to improve patient care and to craft spinal innovation.

4.     I believe the Chinese orthopaedic surgeons should take part in global scientific spinal discussion. For example, AOSpine strongly encourages surgeons from different parts of the world to participate in Knowledge forum, Global Spinal Congress and also World Forum for Spinal Research. Take Knowledge Forum as an example, the Knowledge Forum provides the surgeons with a good framework to organize the research structure and it also has a great impact on education as well. This forum has pyramid-like structure which allows surgeons the possibility to organize specialists at the local, national and international levels. In the coming AOSpine Davos Courses, there will be an AOSpine Masters Knowledge Forum. In a highly interactive atmosphere, the world's top specialists in Spinal Cord Injury, Trauma, Tumor, and Deformities will present seven to eight clinical cases daily, and update the attendees on the latest advances in these four areas of spine pathology. As a participant, you will have the unique opportunity to discuss the newest clinical developments with these leading experts face-to-face. The conclusions of each case will be presented using an up-to-date evidence-based review of the Knowledge Forum literature.
