Ankylosing spondylitis ( AS ) is a chronic inflammatory and progressive disease with the spine and peripheral joints involved, which is the prototype of spondyloarthritis ( SPA ). Non-drug therapy, drug therapy and surgical treatment can be chosen for AS, among which drug therapy is considered as the most important one. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAIDs ), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs ( DMARDs ), biological agents, corticosteroids and other drugs are used to treat AS. In order to standardize the treatment of AS, the European League against Rheumatism ( EULAR ) and the Assessments in Ankylosing Spondylitis International Society ( ASAS ) updated the recommendations for the management of AS in 2010, and the rheumatism branch of Chinese Medical Association also updated the guidelines for the evaluation and management of AS in the same year. The treatment principles, aims, non-drug therapy, drug therapy and surgical treatment of AS are updated in the 2 recommendations. The treatment of AS and SPA are summarized in this article based on the above guidelines and research in recent years.
